Idolatry
Date Posted: November 3, 2009

Various idols appeared to be cluttering the life of that rich young ruler, who was so deeply bothered when he asked Jesus regarding how he could be assured of eternal life.

Position, possessions, properties, finance, wealth, all seemed to be priorities, and yet none of these afforded him satisfaction and peace.

The youngest of the twelve disciples of Jesus, who went on to live the longest, wrote, not long before he died, exhorting people to keep themselves free from idols.

The media heightens the status of celebrity today, to such an excessive extent, that it is not far removed from the notion of idolatry.

A man can hire a goldsmith to fashion what he calls a god, and then bows down and worships it. He may even cry out to it, but it does not answer, nor can it save him from his troubles. He may erect it in a prominent place, only to observe it totter and fall.

Idols give us false ideas of God, and do absolutely nothing to help a man, whereas the risen and living Lord Jesus Christ, when invited, draws near in our hour of need.

Idols misrepresent God, whereas Jesus Christ represents God accurately, authoritatively and authentically, and He can be relied upon totally.

Why would anyone want to bow before an idol, which can neither guide nor comfort, when Jesus Christ can usher you into God the Father’s throne room for all you need?

That experienced apostle, John, is teaching Christians that they should never allow anything or anyone to take the place of Almighty God in their lives.

People can say at times, that your guess is as good as mine, but the man who is born again, and has faith in Jesus Christ, knows.
