Palavers
Date Posted: April 27, 2010

Questions are good, particularly when they are directed at someone who can provide satisfactory and satisfying answers.

When that top theologian courageously approached Jesus Christ with his questions he was not disappointed.

To begin with he did not understand what Jesus was meaning. That happens often.

When he was told that he needed to be born again, this only raised further questions. That can be healthy.

Jesus skips all the palavers. Jesus avoids arranging a series of counselling sessions for Nicodemus, but goes right to the heart of his problem.

Nicodemus wanted into the Kingdom of God, and he came to the one who had the key to the door.

This is the point of entry. Jesus is the door to the Kingdom of God.

If there is such a thing as a spiritual ladder, this is the first rung. If a man is not born again, he is not even on the road to eternal life.

Jesus does not tease, nor does he mislead, nor does He waste time.

Nicodemus had heard and seen Jesus at work. His mind became restless as this interest started to grow.

He was determined not to give up, and that is just as well, because a thirst for spiritual reality and living water can only be satisfied by Jesus Christ.

Nicodemus had taught dry barren ‘theology’, and he realised that, and so did Jesus.

He had been in the church of the day, for years, and as soon as Jesus walked onto the scene, he became aware that there was so much more. How many are exactly in that position?

Three times in the conversation Jesus refers to being born again.

He longed for what was real, refreshing, alive and relevant. He wanted what Jesus had.
