Do not forget the other baby born around this time. As well as Jesus Christ, another special child came into our world?

Was this baby’s birth unusual in any way, like Jesus’ birth?

Jesus birth wasn’t unusual.

His conception was uniquely different, but his birth was like that of any other baby.

What was so unusual about this other baby? His parents were quite old.

One day, when his father, Zechariah, was leading worship in the Temple in Jerusalem, an angel appeared explaining to Zechariah that his prayers had been heard, and that his wife Elizabeth would give birth to a son. The angel stipulated that the boy’s name would be John.

John was born six months before Jesus.

We do not hear very much about this birth. There are various reasons for people being quiet about John.

He was going to be great in the sight of God, and he was.

It matters what God thinks about you.

He was never to drink wine. He would be filled with the Holy Spirit from the day he was born, and bring people back to God.

He would bring fathers and children together. We certainly need that today.

He would turn the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous. His task really was to prepare people for the appearing of Jesus Christ.

It all happened just as the angel had described to Zechariah.

John was a man who speaks what God wants him to say. He offered God’s mercy to people, and showed them how to be set free from their guilt and fears and sins.

Some call him John the Baptist. Why?

He took repenting men who wanted to get their lives cleaned up, and sorted out, and plunged them in the River Jordan.
