Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
What is it that makes you angry, really angry?
Two sons were born. The first was named Cain which means ‘gotten’, or I have ‘brought forth’ a man from the Lord. The second was Abel and his name suggests ‘breath’ or ‘a slight thing’.
Abel was keeper of the sheep, and Cain worked the ground.
They came from the same parents, but were so different. One had faith and one didn’t. This is what divides people.
The first family had a place of worship, to which they could come with their offerings, but it is necessary to come to God in the right way.
Abel came with a lamb. Cain brought fruits from the harvest which he had grown. Abel came in faith, but Cain came with a different attitude, and Cain’s offering was not accepted. He became very angry and it showed.
“Why are you angry?” God asked him. “Why is your face downcast?”
Was he proud of his husbandry? Attitude is crucial when we come to worship and prayer.
God, in His mercy and concern, gives Cain the opportunity to put right what was wrong in his heart. God always does.
His arrogance is revealed by his anger. His attitude is wrong. He is not in a fit state to worship. His relationship with his brother is questionable.
If he did what was right, his offering would be acceptable, but if he refused to amend his ways, sin was waiting to pounce, and it did.
How we come to God is important and it is essential that we sort out bad relationships first. Jesus Christ made that very clear.
Cain’s anger translated into action and he murdered his brother.
He had never seen or heard of murder.
What is in man’s heart will come out in some form.
