“What students should learn in American schools, above all, is the religion of Jesus Christ.

“The Bible is the sheet anchor of our liberties.

“Where we have been the truest and most consistent in obeying Biblical precepts, we have attained the greatest measure of contentment and prosperity.

“The foundation of our society and government rests so much upon the teaching of the Bible that it would be difficult to uphold that foundation, if faith in these teachings were to cease.

“A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.

“The atonement of Jesus Christ is the only security and rest for my soul.

“Of all the systems of morality, ancient and modern, which have come under my observation, none appears to me so pure as that of Jesus.

“Regarding this great book, the Bible, it is the best gift God has given to man.

“The whole inspiration of our civilisation springs from the teaching of Christ and the lessons of the prophets. To read the Bible is a necessity.

“I have, for many years, made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year.

“Go to the Scriptures. The joy and promises they contain will be a balsam to all your troubles. That Book is the rock upon which our republic rests.

“The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of the Bill of Rights comes from the teachings of Exodus, Isaiah, Jesus Christ and St Paul. I don’t think we emphasise that enough these days.”

These quotations were spoken by former presidents of the USA. How would people react if such powerfully pregnant statements were included in the speeches of today’s leaders?

Times have changed, but not necessarily improved.
