Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
Jesus Christ is relying on these eleven men to produce the goods, and continue the unique work which He started. They have been through a difficult five weeks.
Thursday is called Ascension Day. Forty days after Jesus rose from the dead, having completed, on earth, what God the Father sent Him to do, He went home.
You can stand on that spot on the summit of the Mount of Olives, on the east side of Jerusalem, from which He ascended, leaving His disciples gazing up into the sky.
Jesus left them with a word of promise.
Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised. You have heard Me speak about it. John baptised in water, but you will be baptised in the Holy Spirit in a few days.
These are among the last recorded words Jesus spoke to His disciples, prior to His ascension.
A man’s final words to those whom he loves are important and significant.
Just as John took men and plunged them in the Jordan River, Jesus Christ was going to plunge people in the Holy Spirit.
Do not run away from the city. No running back to the fishing. We have dealt with that one, and do not try to do what I have called you and trained you to do, without the equipping. Wait!
He blessed them as He left. They worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, praising God, and giving themselves to prayer.
They listened. They paid attention. They obeyed, although they did not know how long they would have to remain patient.
Jesus gave them a promise, and Jesus Christ keeps His promises.
There are certain things Jesus Christ cannot do, and one of them is, breaking a promise He has made.
