Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
Joseph! Quickly, wake up. Get up. Take the child, Jesus, and Mary His mother, and escape to Egypt.
Hurry! Move fast, and stay in Egypt until you receive further instructions. Why? I'll tell you.
Joseph, Herod is about to order a search for this Child. His aim is to kill Him.
When The Wise Men came to worship Jesus and present their gifts, they had already called upon Herod in Jerusalem. There, they enquired about where the Child was, who had been born King of the Jews.
Herod is livid and furious. He is about to issue an order that all the boys who are two years old and under are to be killed.
The thought of a rival king enraged him, and Jesus is a very real threat.
Jesus is in danger. His life must be preserved. He must be kept safe.
Up! Go now, to Egypt.
As soon as the angel had discharged his message from God, Joseph immediately prepared to leave for Egypt. Jesus had to be protected from this ruthless ruler.
Not long after they set off, soldiers rode out from Herod's Palace and all the boys who were two years old and under, in Bethlehem and the surrounding district, were slain.
The level of suffering, sadness, cruelty, and pain was overwhelming.
Such are the lengths some people will go, to silence the voice of the Son of God and rid the world of Jesus Christ.
Herod persecuted. Joseph protected.
Herod issued wicked commands. Joseph obeyed the messenger from heaven.
Herod was furious. Joseph acted in faith.
Herod soon died. Joseph heard once more from God, and faithfully led Mary and Jesus out of Egypt, and north to Nazareth.
The risen living Christ no longer needs protection, but many of His people do.
