Questions

Jesus is alone with His disciples, as they rest and recover from a demanding time of service and ministry. He rises from prayer to ask a question.

"What are the people saying about me?" Did He not know?

They give the most favourable comments, editing out any unfavourable remarks.

Some think you are John the Baptist, or Elijah, or one of the prophets. There are those who regard you to be Jeremiah. Many out there consider you to be unique.

Now, that was a mighty compliment to be thought of as being Jeremiah.

It is a phrase frequently repeated today. “He is a right Jeremiah”. What an honour to be called that, provided it is accurate, because that means you are speaking what God wants you to say.

Then comes the big question. Now, never mind what they are saying.

"Who do you say I am?" Jesus confronts and challenges us.

Peter answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of God.” You are the Messiah we have been waiting for. You are the anointed one, anointed by the Father.

Jesus seemed very pleased with Peter’s reply, because He realised Peter had not worked this out for himself. God the Father had revealed this truth to Peter.

What would be your reply?

Jesus commanded them not to let men know what they knew.

Sometimes we are encouraged to share everything and at other times we are commanded to say nothing, or at least keep it within the fellowship, because people could not accept it.

To say nothing at times can be a real test of character, and as difficult as having to speak and testify.

When Jesus tells you to speak, speak, and when He tells you to be quiet, do so.
