Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
A reformer is not only a man who lives by faith in the Word of God, but he is also a man to whom God gives wisdom for the leadership of others.
When spiritual circumstances are dark and confused, and when so much is in turmoil, reformers give light.
Reflecting on what happened across Europe four hundred years ago, it has to be said, and said clearly, that the Reformation was of God.
It was God who revealed truths to men, who were open to revelation, in the same way as God revealed to Peter who Jesus Christ was.
Spiritual truth normally comes through revelation. It is not something a man can work out.
The reformers dealt with challenging questions such as, what is a Christian, and, what is the Church? These are highly relevant and pertinent questions today.
The kingdom of God has been breaking through in various places during these past forty years, and what has been experienced has been of God. Many have no doubt whatsoever about that.
Reformers of past generations lost their lives because of what they said, preached, taught and wrote. That has not been happening today throughout Europe, although it is on-going elsewhere, where persecution is fierce and violent.
Might this be because of apathy and lethargy in society regarding spiritual issues? That could change quickly.
Read what Peter and Paul write in their letters, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and you will come across the most politically incorrect writing, but it is always better to be correct than ‘politically correct’, whatever that means.
Reformers knew that the Christian life was a struggle, and a battle, and they knew that it was not a battle with men, but with principalities and powers, or as one teacher describes it, persons without bodies.
