When Jesus Christ spoke to that Samaritan woman, of the refreshing bubbling bouncing living water of the Holy Spirit, she verges on becoming flippant. Lead me to it then, and I’ll never need to trek out here to this well.

The deeper Jesus went in this astonishing conversation, the shallower she became.

Have you ever noticed that? You are being serious, and others treat it all so lightly, trying to laugh it off, or explain it away.

Never joke when Jesus is being serious.

Never use spiritual truths as material for humour. That is a dangerous way to live.

Jesus tells her to go and bring her husband. He wants to talk to both husband and wife. She has no husband, but she has had five husbands, and the man she is living with is not her husband. Where is this conversation going?

Jesus was getting a bit too close for comfort. Her conscience was starting to be troubled.

Jesus Christ is turning her life inside out, at which point she tries to divert his attention by remarking that he is rather clever and possibly a prophet, and on she goes to raise a religious question.

We Samaritans worship here, but you Jews say we should worship in Jerusalem. Who is right? This was soon to be an obsolete matter.

We do things this way. You do things that way. Who is right?

There is an enemy who seeks to divide people over trivial issues.

This dear woman knows that one day the Messiah is coming. She knew that God was going to send someone very special, and Jesus interjects, “I am that Messiah”.

It was now make your mind up time. She is confronted with the most important decision she would ever have to make.
