Word from Nairnshire

Sweeties

In one morning Jesus Christ lost thousands of keenly interested people, as a direct consequence of his profound teaching, which they found awkward and difficult to embrace and accept.

We can’t take this. He has lost us.

They should have listened and allowed their minds to be stretched.

To become mature disciples we cannot grow with children’s addresses, or short snappy catchy sermons. Sermonettes make Christianettes!

We cannot live on sweeties and crisps in the physical realm, and we certainly cannot in the spiritual realm.

Apparently they were only really interested in what Jesus could give them, or do for them.

Just tell us stories. Speak to us nice parables, and, do some of your exciting entertaining miracles, with water and bread and fish. We like these, but not the difficult stuff.

Twenty four hours previously these same people had wanted to make him king! People can be so fickle.

Jesus sounds disappointed, discouraged, and quite emotional, as He turns to His closest disciples and asks, “You do not want to leave too, do you?”

The risen living Jesus still comes with challenging teaching, and direct questions, particularly in these days when morals have declined and standards deteriorated.

Peter did respond by saying that they had little alternative, with nobody else to whom they could go, which was not a great compliment, but true nevertheless.

As Peter talked his faith blossomed a little when he said, “You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God”.

Believe first, and then know. That is the order.

One day they did desert Him, and when they did run away, they found they had nobody else to go to, but Jesus came to them, risen from the dead.
