Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
Tony Anthony came to speak during Chaplain’s Hour at Inverness Prison to ‘a full house’. Who is he and why did this man attract such attention?
He had been three times Kung Fu World Champion, becoming an international instructor, having been trained in China, London, and Geneva.
So skilful, efficient, and able, was he that his appointment as a close protection bodyguard to the ‘rich and famous’ quickly followed.
One scenario in Cyprus went badly wrong and he ended up in Nicosia’s notorious Central Prison.
An Irish Christian, Michael Wright, read of his plight in the Cypriot press and asked if he could visit.
“Why would anyone want to visit ‘dumb scum’ like me?” Tony knew he was a highly disciplined violent thug!
Michael and Tony met over a number of weeks. He was told he had a hole in his heart, which only God could fill.
He had been seeking to fill it with anger, sex, drugs, money, position, and had no interest in God or Jesus Christ.
He then learned that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, and that Jesus Christ could set him free.
Men don’t cry, and men in Central Prison certainly don’t cry, but Tony did one night, and something dramatic happened which is described in detail in his book “Taming the Tiger”.
Michael Wright loved him like a son, and Tony came to love Michael Wright as a father.
On his release he returned to London, where caring understanding Christians looked after him and help him find work.
Today, he has a global ministry speaking wherever he is invited, but also training believers how to be disciples. There is a difference.
We never know what a letter or a visit might achieve and accomplish.
