Third Man
Date Posted: May 5, 2007

It is mid-afternoon on resurrection day. Two men are walking the seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus. They had seen Jesus Christ crucified, and now they think it is all over.

Do you ever think that?

Their hearts are exceedingly sad. These are two disappointed men.

A third Man joins them. They have no idea who it is.

It is possible to have Jesus this close and not know it. They knew Jesus was dead and dead men don't rise.

Jesus asks them a question, "What are you discussing?"

“Are you the only one who does not know what’s been going on?”

“What things?”

“Concerning Jesus of Nazareth who was a prophet powerful in word and deed. Our leaders handed Him over to be crucified. We thought He was the One Who was going to redeem Israel.”

Their precious Jesus was gone. Their buoyant hopes dashed.

“He said something about being killed and rising from the dead. Do you know this? Some friends say He is risen and alive.”

They believed that Jesus had the answer to all of man's problems, needs, sicknesses, pains, and sins.

These are two broken dejected men, and the Bible does not try to hide this.

This third Man took over and gave them a Bible Study. Dry, dull, boring? Not a bit of it!

They urged Him to spend the night in their home and Jesus accepts the invitation. A meal is prepared. Jesus takes bread and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them to eat. Their eyes were opened.

The hands had come above the table and for the first time they saw the marks, and they knew Jesus was alive.

These hands again. What a unique way to reveal yourself.
