Word from Nairnshire

When the people of God, under Nehemiah’s leadership confessed their sins, it was serious business.

They fasted, wearing sackcloth which symbolised inner repentance, and dust on their heads was an external indication of the sorrow they felt in their hearts.

The Word of God was read for three hours. A further three hours was spent confessing sin and worshipping. This was no shallow superficial repentance.

When the call to prayer and praise was announced, all those present stood, and we have the longest recorded prayer in the Bible.

In a day when the name of God and the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is repeated as a curse, a swear word, or a mere expletive, this people honoured God’s glorious name.

How we use and regard and treat the name of Almighty God says more about us than we sometimes realise.

This worshipping people exalted the name of our creator God as they spoke about the greatness of God, and on they went to speak of how God chooses.

God chose Abraham and gave him that land over which there is such confusion, strife and struggle today.

God makes a promise and keeps that promise, because He is righteous.

He saw and heard the suffering of His people, and He still sees and hears, even when man may think He is not watching or listening.

He sustains and provides, as those praying recall the goodness of God and grace of God, as He, in mercy and with compassion, forgives.

It is immensely valuable at times to review history and remember the character and activity of our awesome God, who is unique and has no equal.

A biblical view of history prevents us from being optimists or pessimists, but enables us to become realists.
