Waiting
Date Posted: November 9, 2010

He was waiting for me to return. Every day since I left he had been looking for me to appear. Each morning he wondered if it would be today.

Father was concerned and anxious about the one who went astray. After all it was his son.

He had made such a mess of things, having squandered all his money. He wanted freedom and fun, living it up in a strange country. He blew the lot and had nothing to show for it, but regrets.

He rejected and despised the privileges of his father’s house, and for a while he even forgot all about his father, but his father never forgot about him.

There was a famine in the land, with all the accompanying shortages. An unexpected crisis arose and he began to be in real need.

Rebellion against the father does not lead to life, but to the opposite.

Rebellion ultimately results in depression, sadness, humiliation and destruction.

He found a job feeding pigs. Now, for a Jew, this was the pits.

He was so out of things, and so isolated and lonely.

When he left home with a full wallet, he never intended ending up in this mess. Few ever do.

He came to himself. He began to think about what he was missing as there were so many blessings, and such warm security, in the father’s house. He recognised his predicament.

Sometimes, God allows us to sink this low before we can arise, and that can apply to nations, as well as individuals.

Jesus tells us how he turned his thoughts into actions. That must happen, always.

He decides to return to his father in repentance, confessing what had been nothing other than sin.

Father was watching and waiting. He still is.
