Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
A family wedding is being celebrated at Cana, a few miles from Nazareth, and Jesus and Mary and some of Jesus’ disciples are present. Weddings could be large lengthy occasions.
They run out of wine and Mary informs Jesus of the situation.
What is Mary really saying? Go on son, show them who you are? Do something miraculous? Let your family and friends know who you are?
These are very natural feelings for any mother. Mary believed that Jesus could do something, but Jesus’ reply is almost abrupt and stark.
Why are you involving me? My hour has not yet come.
You must not tell me what to do. I take my orders from my heavenly Father, not my earthly mother.
Jesus acts to resolve the problem, but in such a way as the guests were unaware of his intervention, as he transforms water into wine.
Given the present problems, currently being experienced over alcohol abuse, would there not be certain circumstances today where Jesus’ desire would be to turn wine into water?
Mary said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you”.
These are the last recorded words of Mary and we could not receive better advice. Whatsoever Jesus says to you, do it.
Jesus used his power for such an ordinary need. He refused to turn stones into bread to satisfy his own need, but he acted differently when it was for others.
Comment was made upon the fine quality of the wine produced.
If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, the best is yet to be, and what naturally can take months or years, Jesus can bring about in a comparatively short space of time.
Jesus always produces the best. No man can improve upon what Jesus Christ provides.
