Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life
by Tom Kelley
For the past three days I have been struggling with a problem. I have not been able to log onto the internet. With this column looming large and needing to be completed I was unable to get to the very place I needed to be in order to get it completed. I finally got tired of continually trying to log on and getting nowhere, so, I called our internet provider, Time Warner Cable. After punching my numbered way through the automatic dialing system I finally got a human voice that was not a recording.
The nice voice at the other end told me she would let tech service know about my problem and that she was going to put me on hold. "Great!" I thought to myself, "How long will this take?" Not long. (was I ashamed for my thoughts) Just a few seconds later I was talking to a very friendly tech person named Karen. She asked me for some information and then consulted her diagnostic diagram of my modem. She asked me to disconnect the modem from its power source and then to disconnect the coaxial cable from the modem.
"We'll let it set for about a minute and then hook it back up," she said with a very cheery sound to her voice. All of a sudden I believed in this woman. I believed that she was going to solve my problem and get me back connected to the worldwide web. After a minute she told me to reconnect the coaxial cable and then reconnect the power supply. I did and, there it was...I was back online. I thanked her profusely for helping me and she simply said, "It was nothing. You must have just had a loose connection."
A loose connection. No pressing technological mumbo jumbo, just a loose connection. My problem was simply a loose connection. Loose connections are the source of a lot of our problems as humans. We get a little lazy in Bible reading or prayer and our lives skew off in a direction we don't understand, but are embarassed by it nonetheless. It's hard to properly handle the Word of Truth when we don't examine it regularly (2 Timothy 2:15).
"But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." Matthew 6:6 Yeah. Prayer. Talking to God. Tightening up that loose connection. It is so hard for God to bless us when He isn't sure if we're even interested in His blessings. Time to go into our room, shut the door, and get reconnected to the true power of our life. Time to tighten up that loose connection with God.
