Chip Shots from the Ruff of Life

I stopped in at the local coffee shop, the Lock N Key, for a cup of coffee yesterday morning. Got my usual cup of decaf. Then I saw them. They didn't normally sit on the back counter. Their customary place of residence was the front counter for those who came in for a coffee-to-go and a little temptation. But there they were. They looked oh so scrumptious and inviting. I caved in. I allowed myself to indulge in one of life's little pleasures. I had a cinnamon roll.

You have to understand the place of cinnamon rolls in my life. My mom loved to bake. Now there are moms who love to bake and aren't all that good at it. Then there are moms who love to bake and have elevated baking to an art. My mom was the latter, and her canvas was the cinnamon roll. The first several years of school I can remember taking a cinnamon roll wrapped up in foil in my lunch bag. All my buddies from there in Jeffersonville knew what was in the foil. They had them before when at our house to play.

Sometimes leverage with your best friends can be a beautiful thing. Give the right guy your cinnamon roll and you get picked first for the ball game at recess. Life was good under the blessing of my mom's cinnamon rolls. But I wasn't the only one with access to these tasty treats. They got around. My teenaged sister carried them also. Plus mom took them to church for socials which attracted the attention of the brother of our minister at that time, Bob Wright. John Wright was a student at the Cincinnati Bible Seminary and mom's cinnamon rolls were a staple of his diet.

When something's good people find out. They find the best coffee houses, the best restaurants, the best department stores, the best hardwares, the best whatevers. Good stands out. It attracts. It draws people like a magnet. There is one thing about good that stands as a truth. Unless someone tells someone else about what's good, nobody knows about it. Good is only good if people find out about it. Jesus understood this principle very well. It was a cornerstone of His "Sermon on the Mount."

"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16 So what are we waiting for? Let's take the aluminum foil off our good and share it with others. Let's let others know what good things God wants to share with them.
