Just the other day, while coming back from Lexington, I saw a bumper sticker on the back of an SUV. It posed what, I'm sure, the driver thought was a rhetorical question. In other words, the answer to the question was so obvious that it was a slam dunk the reader would get it right. The question was, "Who would Jesus bomb?" A "no brainer," right? I mean, after all, Jesus came "that the world, through Him, might be saved. (John 3:17) Why would Jesus bomb the very people He wants to save? Add to that, the very nature of a bomb blast is so inhumane that Jesus wouldn't do something like that? Would He?

Have you ever considered what it would be like to drown? You're out in the middle of the ocean and your strength is gone. You keep trying to tread water in hopes that someone might find you, but no one ever does. You begin to slip beneath the water as its cold has seeped into your body so deeply that you're almost numb. You can taste the salt water as it enters your mouth and you begin to fall beneath the surface and take in more water. You start drifting even deeper into the ocean and are completely engulfed. Terror fills your heart as you realize that you are most assurredly going to die. Your body starts to convulse as your internal systems react to the breakdown now happening within your body. What a horrible death as you finally lose consciousness and sink into the depths of the sea.

Now, consider a nuclear bomb blast. When the bomb hits, those within the first several miles are dead in almost an instant as the bomb's heat literally quick cooks their bodies in just a matter of seconds. No warning, no terror, no struggle; just death. There may possibly be an instant in which the eyes see the blast, but not enough time to truly process what has happened. Death is swift, almost humane. What could take many minutes, perhaps even hours, to accomplish in a drowning, happens in a few short moments. Who would Jesus bomb? I wonder!?!? Who would He drown?

Three thousand years before Jesus died for our sins, He (the Word, cf. John's preamble to his gospel) agreed with the Father, God, to destroy the world with a flood. In short, Jesus decided to drown the world. Genesis 6-9 chronicles not just the event of the flood, but the thought processes behind it. God (read Godhead, the one God) decided man was too evil to allow to continue to exist. Genesis 6:5-7 God was so sorry He had made man that He decided to destroy Him. He picked the torturous method of drowning for mankind's punishment and judgment. In Genesis 9 He promised Noah that He would never again flood the earth.

"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentence. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up." 2 Peter 3:9,10 Who would Jesus bomb? The unrepentent? The Godless? The unsaved? Those who are not a part of His kingdom? I think we need to give that question a little more thought and a lot of prayer and then ask ourselves, "Are we in or are we out?"
