Repentance Lost?
Date Posted: February 14, 2016

There is a book that was written many, many years ago entitle “Paradise Lost”. It endured many years. It was required reading in many colleges and universities, but seldom heard of today. Along with it, a companion book entitled “Paradise Regained” also became a classic.

The future of Christianity and even nations may depend on a discovering and implementing of a word - repentance. Repentance, not only by those who hear the gospel and respond in faith, but by the repentance of those by who have already believed.

But has repentance also been lost?

Even street preaching has largely discontinued making a reference to the word. Very few seem to know what it is (or was). Today it is to be thought about only if all else fails, then repentance may come to mind.

Was my repentance real? Did I really believe? Am I really converted? Am I really saved?

This author wrote some time ago concerning what seemed to be an overt avoidance of the word repentance. Even at that time, after attending a well known mega-church for seven years, I could not recall hearing from leadership the word “repentance”.

Many have misunderstood repentance.

Many in modern Christianity - leadership as well as attendees - believe it is to be done only once when someone is baptized, after being convicted of all sins of the past. Unfortunately, many have believed they were finished with that word when the baptismal is over. This undercuts the process of spiritual growth. We are to “GROW in grace and knowledge”. (2 Peter 3:18).

One grows in grace by progressively overcoming the sin nature that remains in us even after believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior and are baptized. When the Holy Spirit progressively reveals sins and flaws after belief and baptism, He expects us to admit and confess these newly revealed sins and flaws, and ask forgiveness as we grow in His grace and knowledge.

In order to grow in grace and spiritual holiness, we are to confess sins as we are made aware of them over time. Upon our confession, when we are made aware, and confess to Him - even though He has known them all along - we grow in more and more grace, more and more knowledge, and more and more spiritual maturity, and therefore more and more we become like Him.

Without acknowledgment and confessing of sin that the Holy Spirit has progressively reveals, we can become stunted, lethargic, and unproductive as the begotten children of God.

Someone should have written a third volume entitled “Repentance Lost”. Sadly, as far as is known, there has not been a companion book written entitled “Repentance Found”. The future of Christianity and even nations may depend on a rediscovering and implementing of that word - repentance.

Repentance, not only by those who hear the gospel and respond in faith, but by the repentance continually of those who have already believed.

Will there be a Repentance Found?

Time will tell…if there is enough.
