'Christ in You...'

The Bondage Of More

Do you feel sometimes that you simply must have rest?

Some Christians in their zeal for their calling to be Christians, become so committed that they are near collapse under their burden.

They feel that they must work harder for Jesus, and perform more than they perceive themselves to be abe may come up short in the sight of God, as well as others.

We must realize that it is the genuine Christian who needs rest the most. We as Christians need rest from our struggles to earn a living, and we also struggle to live a life that is pleasing to Christ. But our struggles are helped by our relationship with God. It is surprising to realize that there is another who needs rest but never finds it:

“Now when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through waterless (dry, arid) places in search of rest, but it does not find it.” - Matthew 12:43

But we who belong to Christ, have a most resting promise.

And we have an example of Jesus himself who needed rest.

“The apostles [who had been sent out on a mission] gathered together with Jesus and told Him everything that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a little while”—for there were many [people who were continually] coming and going, and they could not even find time to eat. And they went away by themselves in the boat to a secluded place.” - Mark 6:31-32

So many times true Christians struggle extra hard to earn a living, and pay the bills, as well as support the church with tithes and offerings. These things, of themselves are right and good.

However Christ is not pleased if we sacrifice our health on the alter of giving, however honest our intention is. What good is a good record of giving and sacrificing if we diminish our future ability to serve and support the cause Christ in the future? As sincere as we can be, we can fulfill the law of diminishing returns by sacrificing our ability to keep the law.

In the sincere effort to produce in the name of Christ, we can sacrifice not only our present health and family by our struggle for success. If we are not careful we can become like the of the president of a major labor union said many years ago. He was asked what his labor union would ask for the coming year. His answer was simple but apparently very honest.

He said simply: “More!”

Let us not sacrifice to the god of this world by striving to receive “more” for the sake of more. Jesus is not served and honored by sacrificing our being, our health and time with family on the alter of “More”, but live a balanced life that enables us to do more with less stress, and time to draw close to Him, and have more strength to honor and serve Him “more”.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls.” - Matthew 11:28
