The Saints Who Slept
Date Posted: April 21, 2024

There is section of scripture that is not often addressed in the history of Jesus death on the cross, but this portion of that momentous drama, underlines God's promise to us in a most dramatic way. I

It consists of only a few verses in the Bible, but should inspire us, encourage us, and commit us to living a Godly life, and strengthen our hope and faith. After the crucifixion, some who had died and were buried rose from the grave. Apparently, as normal human beings, not as immortals.:

"Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many." - Matthew 27:50-53

This not only demonstrated that Jesus would rise again, but it was also a witness to what Jesus and the Apostles said concerning all those who believe in Him. This is given as a preview of the resurrection of those when Jesus returns.

God showed in this event a promise to all those who trust in the death of His Son to raise them up in like manner, except those who are resurrected when Jesus returns will have immortal bodies, just a Jesus did when He rose from the dead.

Their resurrection was God's sign and promise that the grave cannot hold all those who believe in what Jesus had just done. God proved His power, and that His faithfulness would endure through the ages, and finally at Jesus's return after His ascension, that one day all who are then in their graves would be resurrected. Not as mortals did that day, but with immortal bodies never to die again.

One can only wonder what others must have thought who saw those who had come out their graves.

The power to resurrect would some day be extended to all, through what had just occurred with the Son with God.

God the Father proved many centuries ago as Jesus was on the cross, what He intended to do for all of those who would die until Jesus returns. God the Father promised eternal life the very day His Son paid the price of that guarantee.

May all who believe in Jesus sacrifice be assured that they also will live again - forever!

" And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever." - Daniel 12:2-3
