'Christ in You...'

The Tower
Date Posted: December 27, 2015

“And the whole earth was of one language and of one accent and mode of expression. And as they journeyed eastward, they found a plain (valley) in the land of Shinar, and they settled and dwelt there. And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. So they had brick for stone, and slime (bitumen) for mortar. And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower whose top reaches into the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the whole earth.” - Genesis 11:1-4

Why the tower of Babel?

To repopulate the earth after the great flood? Yes - but much more. The incident regarding this tower after God destroyed the earth with the flood, means much more than a record that God chose to preserve for the ages to come.

It is also prophecy.

Many years after the great flood when mankind had begun to increase in numbers, they perceived a need for them to bind together in order to gain safety and the resulting power of collective ability to accomplish goals. The tower of Babel was apparently one of the first results of human collective effort after the flood. Together, in agreement, great things could accomplished.

God apparently saw two things regarding this effort. First, through collective effort, given enough people and enough time, anything they plan could be accomplished. As we ponder that action of these people after the flood, we can see they perceived a genuine need to do something to unify them.

Undoubtedly, although they all spoke a common language, there were disagreements concerning many possible courses of activities that would assure a more united body of people. This is indicated vividly by the statement of the real reason for such a project, “let us make a name for ourselves”. Justification for their plan is revealed by the statement, “lest we be scattered over the whole earth.” God realized that if the project is accomplished, they would eventually be capable of anything they imagined that they could do. God then said:

“Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.” - Genesis 11:6

God’s statement concerning mankind’s ability to eventually do anything they would plan to is striking indeed! One is tempted to think God surely must not mean there is “nothing” that mankind imagines to do can eventually be done. But God says there is no limit.

…given enough time.

The amount of time that has passed God since the language of the earth could perhaps be estimated. Needless to say it has been a long, long time since God scattered mankind into every nook and cranny of the earth.

Now let us fast forward from that day when all people on earth began to realize that they could not understand each other any more, and were scattered eventually on all the earth. So we see today. Undoubtedly many have realized what is beginning to be a common observation by recognition that “the world is shrinking…”. And so it is. In many different ways. Economically, militarily, religiously, educationally, politically, and many other ways.

The Tower Of Babel is without a doubt being rebuilt. Mankind has all but succeeded in amalgamation in almost all the conditions that originally divided those whom God scattered around the earth in order to prevent them from accomplishing anything they imagined to do. Those at the Tower O Babel were not including God in their desires or plans.

So it is today. Very few leaders of the world include God in their plans. There are only a few, relatively speaking, who seek God’s will in their plans.

Some day, God must intervene - before “nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.”
