The Unseen War
Date Posted: February 9, 2020

Have you ever sensed that something was occurring around you that made you uneasy? Or perhaps something in your life that just does not make sense, that you could not really describe to someone else?

Most of the time such sensations are based in altered emotions by outside influences. Usually there is a logical explanation. The explanation can vary from something we ate, to an unpleasant (or pleasant) encounter, or just not being able to put pieces together in an issue. Usually these feelings are forgotten, and we go on with our lives and routine. However, there are activities going on in the universe, in our world, in our lives - even in our bodies - that cannot be explained by reason or logic, or just think it through.

A number of years ago a book was written about the unimaginable workings and activities that constantly occur in the human body. The human body could almost be described as a world in itself. What goes on in our bodies every second of our lives, if it could be enlarged to the size of the earth would make the activities of mankind look like we are all asleep by comparison. There is a cauldron of rushing to and fro of millions of living organisms, some carrying messages, some performing destruction activities, other performing recreating other elements. There living elements that could be called messengers whose only job to carry instruction to others to enable those elements to perform their duties in the body. Perhaps the most fascinating truth about all this is that there is a literal war rampaging within our bodies every second that we live. The participants in this war can be described as between the “good guys and the bad guys”. Both are organized into an army, and each “army” has a leader or a commanding General. They are constantly fighting each other. The bad guys are trying desperately to destroy our bodies. In short, to kill us. The good guys struggle constantly to defend us and to keep us alive. The amazing thing is, if we can accept it in these terms, death physically occurs when - for whatever reason - the good guys loose. The bad guys win. We die.

There is another world outside our awareness and our conscious living that is almost unimaginable for our minds to contemplate. There is an unseen world, not visible to any of us, at all times functioning in our world, the skies, and the universe that would astound us if we could see it. It is full of activities that would make the activities in our visible world seems dull, and uneventful, like child play by comparison.

This is the spirit world - the unseen (normally) activities of angels and fallen angels, or demon spirits. At one time past, many angelic spirit rebelled against God and were cast out of heaven (Luke 10:17-19; Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:12-17). In these verses references are made to beings that are obviously not humans, while portraying evil human kings and leaders as having the same character traits as their anti-types.

God’s Word is replete with statements, indications, and hints about this world - the unseen world. In some ways this world contains all the elements of our visible physical world - the one we live and move and have our being in (Acts 17:26-28). They are both part of God’s domain - the visible and the invisible. There are unseen spirit beings who also are separated into bad guys and good guys. There is a constant struggle between the two.

Sometimes we can see the results of this activity with our human eyes, but must of the time God does not allow this. He did in the case of the prophet Elisha. The prophet Elisha and his servant was protected on all sides by angelic hosts and chariots of fire which could not be seen. His servant could not see this, so Elisha ask God to show him the unseen spiritual army surrounding them. Apparently Elisha at least knew they were there, as he said to the servant "Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them".

Also there is much unseen spiritual activity within the sky and atmosphere around us. There is a “prince” (leader or commander) in charge of the powers of the atmosphere, or the air (Ephesians 2:1-2). This is further indicated in Job 1:6-7; 12,18-19. When allowed by God, Satan has enormous power, to influence human minds and actions, as well the elements of the atmosphere, including weather. During the early stages of WW2, one of the pivotal events of that horrible conflict was what is referred to as Dunkirk. This event resulted in the saving of thousands of British trapped by Nazi armies. It has been called by many as the “miracle of Dunkirk”. It was a miracle of almost perfect stillness of the sea that was unpredicted, and supposedly never happened before at that time of the year. An honest mind would have to admit it - it was a miracle of weather, of God countermanding the prince of the power of the air, saving an entire army, and perhaps changing the outcome of that war.

One of the most striking evidences of an unseen war within the angelic realm is recorded in the book of Daniel:

“And [the angel] said to me, O Daniel, you greatly beloved man, understand the words that I speak to you and stand upright, for to you I am now sent. And while he was saying this word to me, I stood up trembling. Then he said to me, Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind and heart to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come as a consequence of [and in response to] your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief [of the celestial] princes, came to help me, for I remained there with the kings of Persia.” - Daniel 10:11013 (AB)

Here we get a glimpse of a war in the spirit realm which occurred during the great conflicts of world powers during the days of the prophet Daniel. The effects of some of this can be seen in a close examination of history.

When we see circumstances and events in the world, in our lives, and even our bodies, there is always more going on than meets with our comprehension. There are unseen wars and conflicts, attacks and counter-attacks, moves and counter-moves and activities that are totally unseen by any human. We need not ever be fearful, because the glorious truth is that God using all these unseen physical and spiritual activities to accomplish His great purpose - the final eradication of all evil, and the expansion of the holy and righteous family of God.

With this wonderful knowledge of God’s participation in all things, we should never fear. Not only are we more valuable than “many sparrows”, but more valuable than kingdoms, and legions, even angelic hosts, world events, personal circumstances, personal health, and that nothing - physical seen or unseen, or spiritual seen or unseen can ever separate us from God: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:38-39 (AB). As someone said about our life story in Christ, “I have read the ending…and we win!”.

For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” - 2 Corinthians 4:15-18 (AB)
