You And Your Conscience
Date Posted: December 13, 2015

Is it true that we should let our conscience be our guide?

God gave Adam and Eve a conscience. Their conscience moved them to hide themselves from God after they sinned against Him regarding the tree. Sin from that event until now, sin and the fear of sin has been both a curse and a blessing.

God enabled mankind with a conscience when Adam and Eve were created. Had they not sinned, their conscience would have been a blessing. Sin corrupted them and provoked a feeling of shame and guilt. Even until now, the God-created conscience in mankind serves the purpose for which He created it in Adam and Eve.

There may be actions and beliefs in your life that are not forbidden by God. However, If you feel that they are forbidden by God, your conscience acts as a reminder that you are not yet perfect. After believing in Jesus Christ, your conscience is no longer intended by God to make you feel condemned. Your conscience is your guide on the road to spiritual maturity and perfection.

Something may not be forbidden by God, but to you, it may seem to be if it continually assaults your conscience. This is caused by a lack of spiritual maturity. Legally and in God’s sight, you are purified upon your repentance and sincere belief in Jesus as you Savior.

As you grow in grace and knowledge, you realize that what convicted you with guilt no longer affects you because you are growing in righteousness. Your conscious becomes more and more at ease and joy and peace begins to take its place.

You are beginning to bear fruit (John 15:8). In the meantime, you are considered righteous and innocent in God’s sight because your guilt has been paid for by Jesus on the cross. The propensity to feel guilt will be less and less.Your conscience is slowly being made free from guilt feelings as your thoughts, actions, and feelings confirm that you now have eternal life.

Things past, things present, things to come, cannot separate you from eternal life that permanently resides in you. In the sight of Jesus and the Father you are considered innocent and purified by the shed blood of Jesus. You will stumble and sin, but your heart is considered white as snow because of Jesus and your faith in Him. Eventually, as your conscience feels less and less guilty, you will experience the “peace that passes understanding”.

Your faith has made you whole. Guilt feelings are occurring less and less until you are made perfect at Jesus' return.

Until then…"let your conscience be your guide".

"Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect [when it is] God Who justifies [that is, Who puts us in right relation to Himself? Who shall come forward and accuse or impeach those whom God has chosen? Will God, Who acquits us?] Who is there to condemn [us]? Will Christ Jesus (the Messiah), Who died, or rather Who was raised from the dead, Who is at the right hand of God actually pleading as He intercedes for us?Who shall ever separate us from Christ’s love? Shall suffering and affliction and tribulation? Or calamity and distress? Or persecution or hunger or destitution or peril or sword? Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us. For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8 :33-35,37-39
