A Black Pot of Spagetti
Date Posted: January 6, 2008

I was beginning to get a hair annoyed. My arms were full of music and a CD and speakers that I was trying to unplug from the computer to take into my bedroom. I still had one more song to learn for worship practice and mere minutes left to do it. Of course, I wasn’t dressed to leave the house either, so my plan was to take the speakers to my room to learn the music while I did what little getting ready I was going to do.

So with overloaded arms, I was leaning down in between my desk and the wall trying to unplug the speaker cords. I’m sure the wires coming out of your computer are neat, but mine look like a big pot of black spagetti. I was trying to unravel the noodles with one hand in the dark. So, as I said before, I was beginning to get a hair annoyed. How in humanity did these cords find themselves in such a mess?

“It’s so dark down here.” I said to nobody because nobody was listening. I couldn’t see which cord belonged to what, and undoing this tangle with one hand was…

Wait… a light. That’s all I needed was a little light! I might not even have to put down all my stuff if I just turned on the lamp that was three inches away and positioned right over the spot I was working: Such a simple answer to save my hair from being annoyed.

I think we often have problems in life with similar circumstances. Life overflows with responsibility while we dig around into a mess trying to figure out the right thing to do or the best way to go. We fumble around in the dark feeling like there are no answers. But there are answers; we just haven’t turned on the light yet.

The Psalmist writes:

“The unfolding of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to the simple…

Direct my footsteps according to your word” (Psalm 119:130-133).

If you’ve got life to untangle this year, make a new commitment to be in God’s word. Got a marriage to fix, a child to discipline, a co-worker to love but you just can’t see how to do it? Turn on the light!
