That's What I Want….
Date Posted: November 13, 2005

"Most people, if they had really learned to look into their own hearts,
would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world.
There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you,
but they never quite keep their promise.
The longings which arise in us when we first fall in love, or first think of some foreign country,
or first take up some subject that excites us,
are longings which no marriage, no travel, no learning, can really satisfy. "

C.S. Lewis in "Mere Christianity."

It's been a weird day. The boys have been gone several hours to a football game, and Scott and I are home alone. Like I said, it's been a weird day.

I've been in the mood all day to spend money- that I don't have. I imagined hiring out all my undone projects today. After I had scheduled someone to come next week and re-tile the bathrooms, re-carpet our house, and put a fresh coat of paint on all our trim, I dreamed of going to the mall and buying all new bedding for the boys.

But I woke up from my daydreaming and decided that I needed something interesting to drink, so I made myself a chai tea latte. It would have tasted better if someone had made it and brought it to me, but it was good non-the-less.

That didn't seem like quite enough, so I went back to the kitchen and poked around. A bowl of Cheerios. That sounded good- but just a small one, in case something sounded better in a few minutes. And something did- a few pieces of salami wrapped around some black olives, some artichoke hearts, the parmesan cheese off of yesterday's Caesar salad, a small piece of lasagna, and a big glass of ice tea with a wedge of lemon.

You think once my stomach started hurting I would be satisfied, but I wasn't. Scott and I went to Marshall's to look at Christmas decorations. Wow! I needed a lot. The craving in the middle of my chest for whatever I was craving was even bigger now!! What's a girl to do!!!

But by this point in my life I've realized that even if my house looked like Southern Living magazine and I got to eat out every meal every day, I still would not be satisfied.
What my soul longs for is the satisfaction that comes only from God. The prayer that I pray is the same as Moses prayed "Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days." (Psalm 90:14)
