Favorite Verse "A Good Measure"
Date Posted: February 28, 2014

“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured in your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38

“Give . . .” What we do for someone in the name of the Lord, whether devoting our time, talents, treasure, or telling, God notices it. No matter in what form we give, God honors our effort.

“. . . it will be given . . .” God sees what we do and he returns our deed through others. We might not receive back what we gave but in ways that we need, at the right time.

“A good measure. . .” God doesn’t skimp when it comes to giving His blessings. He sees us as worthy of His attention. We receive an ample supply of blessings every day. What we have to do is learn how to recognize them. As we learn of Him and His ways, we find more blessings in our lives.

“. . . pressed down . . .” I have always thought of brown sugar when I read this section of this verse. When we bake and the recipe calls for brown sugar, we have to pack the measuring cup so that there is no unfilled space.

“. . . shaken together. . .” When she fried chicken, in order to coat the pieces, my mother always placed the flour and seasonings in a bag. She then dropped those pieces into the bag and shook it. God sometimes places us in settings that allow us to receive what we need poured over us,more than we imagine as we work for Him. He blesses us so much we feel his presence all around us.

“. . . running over. . .” In our town, there was a public drinking fountain that had no way to turn it off. It was a pipe connected to a bubbling spring. The water came up the pipe and spilled over into a basin. The water refreshed those who drank from it. Likewise, when He rewards us, God goes to the extreme. He takes care of our need in such a way that we can’t help but see his hand in our lives.

“. . . will be poured in your lap.” God will allow us to see the blessings He has given us. Blessings come in many forms: friendships, rest, conversations with those close to us, and special vacations.

“For with the measure you use. . .” How do we measure things? In my kitchen I have a two cup measure I use often. One time I needed a yard stick, my husband suggested I purchase a metal 4-foot measure. So I did. We sometimes evaluate what we have in our lives using God’s standard, as we should.

“. . . it will be measured to you.” God measures the blessings we receive. He doesn’t use an eye dropper but a very large container, so large we can’t perceive its size. The Lord does this because He loves us, His children.
