Blessed Are The Merciful
Date Posted: June 16, 2023

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” Matthew 5:7 (NIV)

Jesus singled out the ones who exercise forbearance in dealing with others. We see Him showing mercy in His life when our Lord forgave the woman caught in adultery. Also he forgave the paralytic of his sins.

Showing mercy simply means we overlook the wrong done to us by another. We take into consideration the bad action and forgive the one who caused it.

Receiving mercy from another may follow our confession of a wrong doing on our part. In movies, we hear defense attorneys tell the judge that their clients ‘through themselves on the mercy of the court.’

In church, we hear of prayer requests for travel mercies for someone who will be making a trip either for business or for vacation. When we have sinned, we approach God’s throne and ask for His mercy as we seek forgiveness.

God’s plan is to give mercy to all; all we have to do is admit our sin and ask for it. In the book of Lamentations, Jeremiah looks back at the destruction of Jerusalem. He gives a glimmer of hope to his readers-then and now.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions (mercies) never fail.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 (NIV)

God’s mercy may follow a time of discipline, which he does in love. He may show us His great love after we have had a season of prayer.

He shows the depth of His love as He keeps us safe from danger. I know of several families where one of them has become a caregiver for the other. One of these instances is a mother caring for her adult son. In two others, a husband is caring for the wife.

I also personally know of two husbands who cared for their wives until the Lord took the women to be with him. In yet another, a wife and mother cares for the husband and the daughter. All these caregivers show God’s love to their families and to all who know them.

In each case, the caregiver does the tasks because of their love for the other or others. In each example I have given the caregiver has a relationship with the Lord. Jesus is with these as they care for the other. He gives them strength for the tasks that need done.

Jesus rewards ALL who show mercy to others. As we walk on this earth, we are to extend mercy to those whom we meet, the pharmacist, the check-out clerk, the insurance man, the postal carrier and those who live in our neighborhood.

Dear Lord God:

We thank You for the mercy we have received from You. We thank you that we can extend mercy to those we meet. We ask that you allow us to see mercy displayed in the lives of those with whom we deal. Help us as we extend this mercy in our daily transactions. We will give You the praise. In the name of Jesus, we pray. AMEN.
