“I will bless them and the places surrounding my hill. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.” Ezekiel 34:26 (NIV)

From time to time, we receive blessing from God. He chooses to grant us special favors to make our lives richer. We spend a certain season of the year counting the ways God has blessed us. Could it be possible that we are to acknowledge His blessings upon us throughout the year?

This spring I started a journal listing of blessings God showered on me. My goal is to be able to share one thousand blessings in my blog during the month of November. There are some repetitive thoughts—sunshine, a good night’s sleep, a special phone call.

Late this past spring, we had some work done on our roof-a new layer of shingles and the repair of a roof joist. When the contractor suggested a certain type of shingle- one that was sturdier- I liked the pattern I saw. When the crew finished the contractor called us out to look at it. After I scanned the work, I glanced to the house across our side yard. For a second, my heart pounded; that house- recently refurbished- had the same pattern in another color.

A friend of mine and I looked at the other house. We both liked the variegated pattern of that roof. I never thought about getting something that looked so fine.

My husband grew up in the southern part of our state. He maintains a close friendship with a family from his youth.

He and his friend had talked about taking the friend’s grandson fishing in the friend’s pond. The fishing event happened toward the end of May. Hubby left in the late morning. By evening, he returned home. After telling me about the time spent with the friend and his grandson, He went out to the car and brought in a surprise. The friend’s sister and her husband sent us a 16 10:20 framed photograph of a landmark from that area. The frame adds two and a half inches all the way around the picture. One of my friend’s at church knows the area-she has family in the same county. I told her about receiving this gift. My friend’s words summed up my thoughts, “You’ll treasure that.”

Early last year when our son relocated out of state, I re-gained my writing room. I wanted something- a love seat or a recliner where I could sit and read or write on my NEO. I thought about a futon couch. I measured the space where my intended purchase would go.

Late last summer, our son let us know he planned on visiting shortly after Thanksgiving. I had to get serious about finding something. I needed whatever I purchased to serve two purposes—a place to sit for me and a place to sleep for our son.

I prayed about finding the right piece of furniture. One Sunday at church I felt led to talk to a very close friend about my need. Her husband had a love seat with a hide-a-bed he had thought about selling. I told her of my thought of a futon couch.

I did some research and discovered a futon would be too big for the space I had. I envisioned it sitting in front of a double window. I also saw a quilt covering those windows. I had shared the quilt idea with my friend. A few days later she called and told me she found a light weight quilt with pillow shams for at our local Christian Center. Her husband decided on a price for the love seat. It was more reasonable than what I had seen advertised.

When our son came in about six weeks later, we pulled out the bed, and he slept there. I have to work to keep the love seat cleared of my books and things but I do feel blessed to have it.

Right now, that love seat is a special blessing. We had temperatures in the nineties over the Memorial Day weekend and for weeks after. Just before the holiday weekend, Hubby purchased new window air conditioner for the back bedroom at the end of the hall. I was able to stay in my writing room for the duration of the hot spell, pull out that hide-a-bed and sleep very well.

I consider the love seat/hide-a-bed, the air conditioner, our friends and their families special blessings from God.
