God's Words For US

Fears

“Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, I will uphold

You with My righteous right hand. For I, the Lord your God,

Will hold your right hand. Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’”

(Isaiah 41:10,13 NKJV)

As humans, we sometimes have fears. Some of us chose not to voice them to others because we think might be looked at as being silly. Small children are afraid of the dark. Certain adults, as children, got scared of storms and have that fear with them their whole lives.

When we face something we haven’t been through before, it is easy to have fears. Before our son was born, I attended a prenatal class at the hospital we went to. The nurse showed us the labor rooms and even taught us the steps of natural childbirth-including the breathing techniques. When we arrived at the hospital and got signed in, I noticed my muscles tighten up and didn’t understand why. When I told a friend about my experience she told me it was due to the fear of the unknown.

A friend of mine has a fear of the dark. As a child, her stepfather did some unspeakable things to her. Not only does she fear the dark. She keeps her door and storm door locked when her husband is at work. Imbedded in her memory is the fear of past trauma.

Some children have a fear of dogs. Something happens and they can’t get past that feeling.

Some adults have a fear of being alone. A surviving spouse has to learn to do the chores that the departed one had always done or rely on someone else to do them.

The director of the nonprofit ministry I work in wrote this for one of our newsletters:” Did you know that God makes 365 references to fear in the Bible, encouraging us to not be afraid? That is one reference for every day of the year. From the beginning of time, God has had to remind mankind and womankind to trust him and not be afraid.”

With God giving us a scripture for each day of the year, maybe He has a message for us. He doesn’t want us to fear; He wants us to trust Him. In Genesis (3:10), the Lord speaks of Adam being afraid because of his nakedness. But as we read further, we hear God ask the question, “How did you know you were naked?” Adam brought his fear upon himself. Sometimes, as humans, we do certain things that we know we shouldn’t and we fear the reprisals. In Exodus (2:14), Moses took things into his own hands-he killed a man. He glanced around and saw no one around before he did it. But the next day word was out. He became afraid; He fled for safety in Midian. Sometimes, we perform deeds that cause us to fear the final outcome.

God gives us scriptural proof that He doesn’t want us to fear.

1.) On the night of Jesus’ birth, the shepherds didn’t know what was happening when the angel came to them and lit up the whole sky. The angel’s first words were, “Do not be afraid. . . .” (Luke 2:10, NKJV)

2.) The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.”(2Timothy1:7, NKJV)

3.) The writer to the Hebrews: Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can mad do to me?”(Hebrews13:6, NKJV)

Whatever fears have plagued us in our pasts, we can give them completely over to the Lord and He will take care of them for us. In our futures when we encounter fears in our walk with Christ, we have these words to keep us where we can stay close to God. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned.(Isaiah 43:2, NKJV)
