God's Words For US
by Cecelia Lester
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)
A friend preached a sermon about how we are to live in the moment. She gave me a lot to think about. I sometimes relive the past and dream about the future. However, I re-learned that God holds the future.
Another friend and I were talking about those who want to know the future of their lives. She told me she didn’t want to know what lay ahead for her because she would be afraid. She is a Christian and knows God has all things in His hands.
My second friend made a wise decision because she has had an extended illness that keeps her housebound. Her only trips out of the home she shares with her husband and daughter take her to the hospital three times a week for treatment. These treatments have caused more issues that affect her health.
Because of my one friend’s sermon and my other friend’s experience, I have chosen not to worry about the future and live each day as best I can. My suggestion to anyone bothered about the past or concerned about the future to learn to live in the present.
As a young adult, I became active in my then church’s women’s missionary society. Each fall the officers met and planned the upcoming year’s programs, month by month. The pastor’s wife always reminded us that we did this in faith. She spoke with wisdom. Come winter, we sometimes had to cancel at least one month’s gathering. One time, I had to adjust a program to a later month because I was borrowing a slide presentation from a missionary and that material was on loan during the time I requested it.
We have to remember that God is in control of all things. He sees the big picture; we can only see what lies in front of us. Because of this aspect of the way things are, certain words come to mind when we think of our relationship with God.
*Trust: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
*Faith: Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
*Hope: Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. Psalm 43:5 (ESV)
Friends, when we learn to practice these virtues, we learn to live as God wants us to live. We can live at peace and unafraid of what awaits us.
