Meekness
Date Posted: May 5, 2023

“Blessed are the meek,

for they shall inherit the earth.”

Matthew 5:5 (NIV)

The Guideposts Family Concordance defines meek as patient, steadfast, not harboring resentment.

Jesus singles out those who are patient, reliable, and hold no grudges and tells those in His audience that they receive God’s favor. Those deemed meek will receive—as a divine gift—the earth. The tense of the verb denotes this will be a future happening. That’s all Jesus tells us.

I have known people who illustrate meekness by the way they conduct themselves in their daily business. They are the ones who always give the benefit of the doubt when they face a problem. They are ready to help when another has a need. They pray for all those they meet. Others approach them for guidance when a need arises.

21Century Christians who model meekness have strong beliefs and abide by them. They live for Jesus and harbor no ill feelings when they are wronged. In the instance of being hurt, these persons feel they have been taken advantage of, they work through their issues. When they cause another to hurt, they ask for forgiveness.

This past Friday night, I went through a drive through to get our evening meal. When I sat down to eat my sandwiches and fries, I noticed I didn’t have the three cookies I had ordered. I asked my husband if he had done something with them. No, he hadn’t. I was approaching the level of frustration when I would have driven back to the restaurant and had them correct their error.

My husband said something that diffused my building up emotions. He knew I had given up sweets for Lent. “Looks like you weren’t supposed to have those cookies.” I began to think. That’s right. Had I just waited until Sunday, could have had them.

A meek person doesn’t take things into their own hands. Sarah became impatient and chose not to wait upon the Lord. And we still live with the outcome of that action. Hannah, on the other hand, prayed and waited for God to answer her prayers. God granted her request by not only giving her Samuel but five more children.

Moses had to learn to be patient-he killed a man because that man fought with a Hebrew worker. He spent 40 years in the wilderness tending sheep. Now, to me, that would be an example of a ‘hands-on’ lesson.

Because we are human, we can become impatient. We see evidence of this every day.

When we come to Christ, we invite Him into our hearts. He takes our personalities and molds them to His liking. He implants His qualities into our personas and uses those assets to build His Kingdom.

Prayer:

Dear Lord God:

Thank You for your great love. Thank You for who you are—the creator of all things. Please transform us into the person You want us to become. Please guide us as we try to live for YOU. We will give You the praise. In the name Jesus, we pray. AMEN
