God's Words For US

Our Journey
Date Posted: October 4, 2013

As we go through life we might decide we are on a journey. We don’t get to pick where it takes us. But, we must walk that road that God has laid out for us. When we accept the direction of that road without grumbling, it is easier to travel.

Our road may take us through difficult times during our childhood. We may or may not become rebellious during our teen years, making bad choices. Self-destructive habits may take root and cause us to have serious health issues as we mature.

We marry and have families of our own. What might happen is we go through the same phases but see them unfold from a different viewpoint. We hope our children don’t make the same mistakes we made. Some of our children make their own errors, things that we, as parents and you grandparents, would have never thought of.

Our journeys are easier to endure when we have Jesus Christ guiding us as we travel the way.

I have a friend who has had a complication following what is considered a simple surgery. When I have talked to her on the phone or visited her, she seems to take all these steps in stride. She has hope that she and her husband will get through this ‘momentary trial.’ They decided this is their journey for right now.

What are our journeys in life? When we graduate from high school, we have to choose whether we attend college, go to a trade school, enlist in the military, or some other path. That way we take is better when we have Jesus guiding us along.

Even when we have Jesus guiding us, the way might have a few bumps: having a child who has special needs, a relative who becomes terminally ill because of his choices, having a family member receive a diagnosis of Cancer, different family members receive a diagnosis of dementia, all can tend to bring a person down but when we have Jesus standing beside us He helps us make it through. We find comfort and strength in Jesus. Eventually we find ourselves comforting others as they go through similar trials in their journey. ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with which we ourselves are comforted by God. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, NIV)

I can see God working in the lives of various friends of mine. One woman has owned her own hair salon for five years now. She has expanded her salon at least twice and has improved the appearance of it as she could. Because of her example, her son has become a hair stylist and her daughter has chosen to become a nail technician. Another woman founded a faith-based nonprofit organization and ran it for most of eight years. She recently was selected to serve as the pastoral assistant to our pastor. Both of these women love the Lord and have been led by Him along their journey.

Whatever our journey–wherever it leads us, we need to look to Jesus to see where He wants to take us.
