God's Words For US

The Little Foxes
Date Posted: September 26, 2014

“Catch for us the little foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards,

our vineyards that are in bloom.”

Song of Songs 2:15

A discussion we had in a prayer group one recent morning got me to thinking about the vexing things that seem to bring us down. Our pastoral assistant referred to a devotion she read that began with my focus scripture.

Our conversation set me to thinking. Those ‘little foxes’ create a lot of havoc in our lives, personal as well as spiritual.

My Sunday school teacher calls the process of allowing insignificant things shape our lives ‘majoring on the minors.’ We sometimes hone in on the extremely small points of an event that happens to us.

What can we do to keep those ‘little foxes’ out of our lives? We can try to live close to the LORD. Each of us can strive to “let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart” please God.

When we pray for revival, we need to pray first that we ourselves are right with God. When I was in grade school, I went to church camp one year. In the chapel service, we sang a song called “Let there be peace on earth.” The thing that made this song memorable to me was the line:

“Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

Yes, peace begins in each of our hearts. If we have turmoil in our hearts, it can spew out of our mouths. (Matthew 12:34, Luke 6:45) We have to ask God to put a muzzle on our mouths and step out of the way in order for Him to work and for us to learn what we need to know. Then we need to spend time in prayer and fasting in order to seek the LORD’S will for our lives and to find answers for the issues that confront us and those around us.

Next, we have to wait for the LORD to work out the issues and take care of the chinks in our armor. This calls for patience on our part. A part of patience is keeping the prayer line open. Another part of patience is allowing God to work things out in his own time and as He sees fit.

Let’s all practice prayer and fasting as we see and hear things—little things—that could upset us, things that can tend to loom larger as we try in our own strength to deal with them. If we allow these small things to agitate us, we permit them to balloon out of control and either cause us to become ill or allow these attitudes to be passed on to those around us and they become divisive, wrecking families and even ministries.

Dear LORD:

We thank You for Your undying love for us. We ask You to strain out the ‘little foxes’ from our lives and our interactions. Please do this according to Your grace for each of Your children. In the Name of Jesus, we pray, AMEN
