In the Word

Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why have you not brought Him?"
The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man!"
Then the Pharisees answered them, "Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed."
Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them, "Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?"
They answered and said to him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee."
John 7:45-52 NKJV

Almost as if they were taking their cues from the crowds a few verses earlier, the Pharisees made the same mistake the crowds did earlier. They are relying on what they think they know without examining the facts. Nicodemus tries to dissuade them from making this error which only brings their sharp tongues to bear on him. If they examined the evidence they would see Jesus was not the demon they believed Him to be.

My pastor, Gino Geraci, points out that if you are wrong about Jesus, it doesn’t matter what you are right about. He also says about this verse that the prophet Jonah was from the area of Galilee. The Pharisees were even wrong about what they thought they knew. Their hatred for Jesus even clouded the very thing in which they were experts: interpreting and explaining scripture. They stumbled over the stone which the builders rejected and their hearts were hardened toward Him. They lost the ability to hear what the Spirit was saying about Jesus.
