Word from Nairnshire

“How can I forgive myself?” That is said by more people, and more often, than many of us would like to admit.

These words are often uttered. “I just cannot forgive myself when I remember what I did, and the memory of that continues to haunt me.”

“Years ago, I said something that was really nasty and hurtful and spiteful and every now and again it stabs and pains my heart.”

It is true. We cannot forgive ourselves, but what we might have said or done can be dealt with, and forgiven.

Only Jesus Christ, the Son of God, can forgive.

Many run away for years trying to get away from that situation and yet they only take their problem with them.

Being religious can make things worse. Religion seldom helps. People can go through rituals and rigmaroles, and the past suddenly reappears and rears its accusing head.

God has had problems with religions and religious people throughout the whole of history.

Cain’s religion produced a murderer. He came with the fruit of the earth, symbolising his own efforts, whereas his brother Abel offered a sacrifice which included and involved a life laid down.

Abel’s offering speaks of the necessity for the shedding of blood.

From the days of the first family there is this recognition of the reality of sin, and that only shed blood can forgive sin.

That is why Jesus shed his blood on the cross.

The religion of good works can produce murderers. They murdered the prophets, and crucified Jesus, and killed most of the apostles.

Sacrifice and revelation produces witnesses and martyrs.

Can a man be forgiven? Of course he can. The blood of Jesus Christ can wash away any man’s bad past.

Then the healing process can start.
