Honesty
Date Posted: June 22, 2010

To interrupt a conversation is rather rude, but that meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus is packed with significance.

We are privileged to be permitted to overhear this profound exchange, where Nicodemus realises that God is with Jesus, implying that God is not with him.

Now, there is honesty and openness, and Jesus Christ can always work with someone who is honest and open, and not trying to be something he isn’t.

Jesus knew Nicodemus’ questions before he asked, being aware that Nicodemus was disappointed with religion. It had not given him satisfaction or power in his life. He was looking for something but could not see it. He knew there was something more, but did not know what it was.

Jesus wasted no time in explaining that he needed to be born again.

A baby’s body exists before birth, but it cannot see, or hear, or communicate.

When people say, “I cannot see that. I just don’t understand that. I am unable to communicate with God”, is it because, like Nicodemus, they still need to be born again?

He asks, “How?” Does he feel he is too old to change? Is he aware of his position and reputation in the community?

Some prefer to hold onto position, reputation, and spiritual blindness.

Jesus repeats that you must be born again, signifying that Nicodemus can be born again, and he teaches Nicodemus how he can receive real spiritual life.

Jesus explains everything very simply, as he takes him back to a scenario in the wilderness when the people grumbled against God and against Moses.

It is good to have something vital explained simply, when the consequence is healing and life.

Do not get your answers second hand when you can have them direct from Jesus Christ.
