Word from Nairnshire

There were times when Jesus Christ made the most controversial and unexpected decisions, but with good reason.

On one occasion, early on in his ministry, he travelled north from the Jordan to Galilee, via Samaria.

He had to go through Samaria, and not because it was the only route. He had a specific purpose.

Samaritans were regarded as ‘half-castes’.

Jews and Samaritans were not on the friendliest of terms. It was known that because of pride and prejudice a Jew would make a lengthy detour, rather than risk meeting a Samaritan.

Jesus led his disciples through Samaria.

Not many Jews would be willing to go where Jesus Christ was courageously and determinedly leading his disciples to go.

We are going to speak to the people who will not speak to us. We are going to speak to people who are not on speaking terms with us. We are going among those who despise us.

Jesus would not be restricted to any one class, race, creed or colour.

Christ had come for all sorts and conditions of men. He will go anywhere and talk with anyone.

At noon, he is tired and weary, and as he sits by Jacob’s well, a Samaritan woman comes out to draw water, and Jesus asks her for a drink. Going for water at noon was unusual.

What is even stranger is the conversation which follows. Jesus ignores convention, etiquette, racial and social barriers, as he asks a Samaritan woman for help.

She gives him the cold shoulder to begin with, but within a few hours she, and folks from her village, recognise that this was the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

What a mighty and magnificent act; to lead your whole community to meet Jesus Christ.
