Word from Nairnshire
by Sandy Shaw
It is most disconcerting to hear, on television in particular, of a man having to face his demons. The phrase is being used more frequently, totally out of context. When connected with sport, does the commentator actually realise what he is saying?
The Psalmist knew what it was to face such debilitating influences and forces in his life, but he also knew how to deal with them, and he discovered the secret of where to deal with them.
Ruth and Naomi were confronted with challenging situations in life and each dealt with these serious circumstances in very different ways.
There is a massive difference between disappointment, disaster, affliction and failure, and the fierce onslaught of demons.
One day Jesus met a demonised man. The medical doctor describing the encounter tells of how this troubled soul was restless, uncontrollable and dangerous, and yet even in this pathetic condition he knew who Jesus was.
Jesus discerned this man did not like the situation he was in. Who would?
Demonic spirits make a man what they are like. They compel and control. They desire to dominate, manipulate and intimidate.
Sometimes we do not know where they come from. A mosquito can bite and later you contract malaria.
It has been said that you cannot stop a bird from landing on your head but you can certainly prevent it from building a nest there!
Jesus Christ set this tormented man free. Jesus will not tolerate evil, nor will He show evil any kindness.
One word of authority and the bad spirits had to leave. He did not pray about it, nor did He suggest the man might need weeks of counselling.
When the locals saw him cured, dressed, in his right mind, and at peace, they became afraid.
