Word from Scotland

    by Sandy Shaw

Fear can paralyse us spiritually - we can fear what people around us may say - what they may think. The antidote to a small fear is to get a bigger fear - fear of the possibility of disobeying God. Then - Jesus goes on to speak about being on trial - on trial for our faith - being arrested for what we believe - and……  ( Click for more )
Religious sham and playful acting is futile in the eyes of Jesus - and Jesus speaks about hypocrisy as being like yeast - it acts like yeast. We are in Luke Chapter 12. You need only a little yeast to affect a lot. Yeast spreads very quickly. Yeast works invisibly and silently and secretly - it works in……  ( Click for more )
In Luke Chapter 12 we have teaching from Jesus which is highly relevant in these current times. The momentum appears to be increasing. The crowds are increasing - the pace is becoming faster - the conflict is becoming sharper. There is this growing open conflict between Jesus Christ and the religious……  ( Click for more )
Turn to Luke Chapter 19. At the end of Luke Chapter 18, we read of that poor blind tramp, Bartimaeus, crying out to Jesus Christ for mercy and sight, and Jesus is so gracious and tender and powerful. And just along the road we read of a man who was a rogue and a rascal - and very rich.……  ( Click for more )
Mark tells us about an argument – over ambition – at such an hour! We find that in Mark chapter 10. We also have the account of the healing of a blind man in Matthew 20 and Luke 18. Immediately following this rather argumentative conversation - they……  ( Click for more )
In Luke Chapter 18 and at verse 18,- we read of a certain young man coming up to Jesus Christ. It is the rich young ruler - and he has a question to ask Jesus. "Good teacher - what must I do to inherit eternal life?" This young man was a most attractive person - he was a ruler - he was……  ( Click for more )
Consider just for a moment, that interim period between John Chapter 19 and John Chapter 20, but out of necessity, we go into Chapter 20 where we read of the risen resurrected living Jesus. This broken warring world is living on the wrong side of the resurrection and it is our task to tell the world that there are answers,……  ( Click for more )
In Luke 19 verse 28 - we read of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, riding into Jerusalem. Within the week - Jesus would be betrayed, arrested, falsely accused, illegally tried - crucified, dead and buried. And three days later Jesus would be raised from the dead - that astounding event which we can……  ( Click for more )
In Luke Chapter 18 and at verse 31, Jesus Christ takes the 12 disciples aside, and tells them, “We are going up to Jerusalem”. This is a serious turning point in the Gospel record. Jesus has been speaking to crowds – and teaching the disciples……  ( Click for more )
Psalm 95 is quoted in Hebrews 3 verse 7 and 4 verse 7, where it is said that God is speaking - so it is very much a Psalm for believers. In his mind he is thinking - the rock which Moses hit, and water poured forth - the Red Sea - the Tabernacle - and the mountains of Sinai. Verse……  ( Click for more )
Psalm 95 - begins with the Invitation - "Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;" Here we have another invitation to come into the presence of the Lord God Almighty, the King of Kings - the risen and living and ascended Lord Jesus Christ. There are certain invitations we receive which are……  ( Click for more )
Isaiah 56 - "This is what the Lord says" - and with these words Isaiah Chapter 56 opens, and this is one of the main reasons why we gather together - to hear what the Living God says. What does the Lord God have to say to us today - as a Fellowship or as individual disciples……  ( Click for more )
Isaiah Chapter 55 – "Come - all you who are thirsty - come to the waters - and you who have no money - come, buy and eat! Come - buy wine and milk - without money and without cost." We are making our ways through Psalm 94 and we come to verse 11 – God knows the thoughts of man - he knows that they are futile. We can have good ideas - things we would like to do - but if the anointing of God is not upon them, they are futile. God's intimate knowledge of man is a startling……  ( Click for more )
Psalm 94. What an unusual opening - so different - not many prayers begin by addressing God in such terms. It arrests you. It does get your attention, and, it is true. Now and again - we need something to shake us - awaken us - regarding our praying. God does not reject, ignore or overlook this……  ( Click for more )
Psalm 93 - is quite a short Psalm - but here right at the very beginning is one thing we all need to know - one truth of which we need frequent reminding - "The Lord Reigns" - our God reigns - He is robed in majesty. The picture is quite astounding. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is risen……  ( Click for more )
There is such a contrasting picture in Psalm 92. We looked at the first seven verses, and as we read on, we learn that the wicked are likened to perishing grass – and the righteous are like flourishing trees. Grass is the picture of anything which is short lived - and in the land where these……  ( Click for more )

This Psalm tells us what to do and what to sing when we gather together in the Name of the risen and living Jesus. What has God to say about bullying and harassment? There is a lot of it around! John 16 verse 33 – Jesus taught – “I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and at peace. In this godless world you will experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve……  ( Click for more )

What are we to do when no one else understands our goal – when we know that it is Almighty God who has given us a goal, and aim, a purpose. God gave Noah a vision to save the planet. How did Noah handle getting this Ark built when there were so few people around him who realised what was happening? God had……  ( Click for more )

We continue looking at some of the detail in Psalm 91 as we face the weeks and months ahead. Verse 3 - Our God will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. We can be as foolish at times as little birds - and we can be ensnared and trapped. Now, these……  ( Click for more )

When we know that God guides His people, how do I find God’s will, and God’s ways for my life – God’s plans and purpose for my future? Might we expect just too much from God in the area of guidance? In Isaiah 42 at verse 16 – God has been silent……  ( Click for more )
We come to that time of the year when many think about ‘giving’ and God has much to say and teach us about ‘giving’. There is more said in the Gospels about ‘giving’ that on any other one subject. ‘Promise’ and ‘Promises’ are used over a thousand times in……  ( Click for more )
