Can We Not Preach And Teach Without Causing Division And Unrest?
Date Posted: March 23, 2015

When John preached and taught some got it very wrong and as we move to verse 15 of Luke Chapter 3, we read of that.

Some got it very wrong, and that is all right, provided it is corrected! This is the Christ, they were saying. They thought this might just possibly be the Messiah. They were waiting expectantly for the Messiah. John answered with such humility and modesty. Yes, after his fiery challenging preaching and teaching, this dear man could also be humble and modest when humility and modesty were required. Again we are confronted with questions to which we require sound solid biblical answers. Are you waiting for the return of the Messiah? Do we still preach that Jesus Christ is returning and coming again? I understand that in some places that essential truth in our Christian Faith has been dropped and is now omitted! Verse 16. John explains. I can only do so much for you. I can only deal with the past. He will equip you for the future. We need both ministries. We need the past dealt with, and we need the power of the Holy Spirit for our ministries and service in the Kingdom of God. John speaks about Jesus baptising with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Fire speaks of intensity, and fire burns sin and purifies, and fire spreads. Fire is not a toy to be played with. We must never consider the power and fire of the Holy Spirit in any superficial manner. This is profound and essential and serious. When this flame burns there will be a new desire for worship and praise and fellowship and prayer. We are seeing birthed here zeal and dedication and loyalty and commitment and compassion. This cannot be counterfeited. I am told that a counterfeit £5 note can be detected just by the touch. John goes on to speak about the chaff being blown away, leaving what nourishes. But, now we read of division! John disturbs. He throws the grain up into the air, and the wind blows away the chaff, leaving the wheat. Chaff is burned in unquenchable fire. Verse 18. John preached other things, which we do not have, but there is this call to moral living, and this call to sort things out. John preaches repentance and getting ready for Jesus Christ and all this is good news. Verse 19. This moral word upset Herod. The news of John rippled out across society. Lock him up. Herod became harder. John had a high price to pay. There came that point where Herod could take no more of this preacher's preaching. Repent and confess, or react and explode in anger and rage. Is that not what the church of Jesus Christ has experienced down through these past 2,000 years? If you cannot tame him lock him up. He is silenced and imprisoned and ultimately beheaded. John paid for his ministry with his life. The same light which gives light to some, casts shadows elsewhere. All over our world today many Christians are in prison for their faith in Jesus Christ. There is persecution of disciples of Jesus Christ on a scale never previously experienced. Do be involved in those ministries where people seek to minister to those who are persecuted for their faith in Jesus Christ.
