Word from Scotland
by Sandy Shaw
“The writing is on the wall.” We hear that phrase frequently, but few realise its significance. It comes from the book of Daniel Chapter 5.
There was a party going on, and getting out of hand. Belshazzar, the king of the Babylonian Empire, and a thousand guests, were partying in his Babylonian banqueting hall.
They were drinking from the cups which had been brought from the Temple in Jerusalem, thinking they would enjoy a little rebellion, and a game of disobedience.
I am told there can be a thrill regarding being blasphemous!
Have you ever seen things go wrong at a party?
Alcohol lowers the inhibitions. Sometimes inhibitions go altogether.
In one night Belshazzar lost everything his grandfather had built up.
It reminds me of the truism that “God has no grandsons”.
Godliness cannot be inherited.
We have to come to Jesus Christ as individual men and women.
We can lead others, and pray for them, and set the example, but ultimately, each man and woman has to accept, or reject, Jesus Christ.
That party got out of control. They were intent on doing things for kicks and excitement.
In a scene of abandoned debauchery, with the orgy at its height, a dramatic and traumatic message is given.
Suddenly, fingers appear and words are written which signified, “Numbered, Numbered, Weighed, Divided”.
God had numbered Belshazzar’s days, and he was finished.
He was weighed and found wanting. He was too light for the job. He was frittering away his life as a playboy. His kingdom was divided. The days of that Empire were over.
Belshazzar personified life without God.
Daniel, the man of God, the only man fit to advise, and qualified to interpret, was called for.
Get to know God the Father, through Jesus Christ. Make friends with the Holy Spirit.
These are tumultuous days, as I write this. What might it be like when this is published?
Remain in the vine. Stay safe in Christ.
