Word from Scotland

We move on to read John Chapter 2. On the third day there was a wedding, and Jesus Christ is present. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Mary’s boy, our Saviour and Lord, has just appeared on the world’s scene.
Jesus Christ has just been baptised in water and anointed with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus is just beginning to gather around Him His disciples, and yet, he has time to attend this family occasion. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, so what He is like here in this book, He is the same today.
Here is Jesus Christ honouring marriage. God gave marriage and God made marriage, and at the beginning of a marriage, Jesus Christ is invited to be present. Jesus Christ will attend any wedding when He is called and invited to be present.
Jesus Christ was not married, but one day he is going to be married, and His bride will be the Church.
At this wedding they run out of wine and Mary, the mother of Jesus, explains to her Son what the situation is. “They have no more wine.”
Now, what is Mary saying? What is she expecting? Is it, “Go on Son – show them who You are” – a very natural feeling for a mother. “Do something miraculous. Let your relatives see. Let Your friends know just who You are.”
Mary believed that Jesus could do something.
Jesus reply is almost stark and abrupt. “Women, why are You involving me? My hour has not yet come. You must not tell me what to do. I take my orders from my heavenly Father, not my earthly mother.
This is a difficult passage for various reasons. Are you discovering already that John is not an ‘easy’ book?
Now, Jesus did something about the problem, but in such a way as his relatives and friends were unaware of his intervention. They did not know what had taken place. He did it so that no-one could see.
Jesus will always help people when they are in trouble and when they are in awkward situations, but He will do it His way, and not even mother’s way.
It is good to have Jesus around. It is good to have Jesus present. There is a need and He steps in and eases the problem.
In this case Jesus turns water into wine. I’m sure in various situations today His desire would be turn wine into water.
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” These are the last recorded words of Mary and here is a piece of sound advice from Mary. Do whatever He tells you to do. “Whatever he saith unto you do it.” Mary realised there was a problem and Mary comes to Jesus and Jesus reveals such concern regarding the everyday things of life. The wine can run out and Jesus Christ can still transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Jesus always rewards obedience. Do whatever He tells you, no matter how absurd it might be or appear. Just do what is possible, so that Jesus can do what is humanly impossible.
Jesus tells the servants to fill six large water pots with water which makes around 120 gallons altogether.
Fill them right to the brim. Draw off some of the liquid. Take it to the man in charge of the catering arrangements for the wedding. The water has become wine. Only the servants knew what had happened.
Jesus used His power for such an ordinary need. Stones into bread – no – not for Himself – but water into wine – yes, when it was for others.
Jesus Christ loves to meet people’s needs when they arise, and He blesses abundantly.
The quantity of wine is enormous and the quality is the best. God just gives and gives. He is so generous.
The world normally tries to serve the best wine first, and then when people have had a taste, they can put on poorer wine. The best first and then the quality fades. That is not the way our Jesus works.
The best is yet to be and it does not matter what age you are. If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ, the best is yet to be. It does not matter what you have experienced, the best is yet to be, and what naturally can take months and years, Jesus can do in a few seconds. He is Lord of time. That is why revival can come at any time.
