Is Jesus Exposing The Inadequacy Of A Little Belief?
Date Posted: October 10, 2011

Our last study concluded with these questions. Will you last? Will you go and grow? Will you continue and survive and thrive and be fruitful?

Why are these questions so vitally important? Well, many people fall away over the years and many compromise and wander and even edit or water down the Word of God.

We are in John Chapter 8 and at verse 31. Jesus is speaking to Jews who had come to believe and Jesus knows that there has to be a continuing. As you continue in My word, you will find that what you have received is confirmed to be true. As you receive it and act upon it, you will suddenly discover it all to be so true.

What a timely passage. What a significant verse. This is the very problem we are presently facing, just as they were facing it then.

People find certain things in this book hard to believe and accept and obey. Jesus is saying to them, and to the people to whom we speak and witness and testify, Go on. Go the whole way, and prove that it is true.

Many were believing in Jesus but how deep was that belief? Jesus took these people one stage further to prove that their faith was real, as He said, “Obey My truth”.

Do something about it and you will have reassuring confirmation.

As you do what Jesus tells you to do, two things will happen. 1. You will have real freedom. Do it. Continue doing it. Obey, and you will not be slaves any more.

These were among the words that really spoke to Tony Anthony who spoke to us at the Prison in some months ago and his exciting and challenging story can be read in his “Taming the Tiger”.

Jesus had just touched a very sensitive spot – slaves! The response was startling. We have never been anybody’s slaves. We are descendents of Abraham.

They had been slaves in Egypt, and slaves in Babylon, and now they had been overrun by Rome.

These are the people who claimed to believe reacting in this way.

It is as if Jesus is exposing the inadequacy and unreality of a little belief! He was such a nice speaker, but they wanted to kill him. They wanted rid of him.

Have you ever asked someone who told you something questionable, “Now is that really true?” And sometimes they explode! Are you accusing me of being a liar?

Jesus touches various very sensitive spots as he talks to these religious people.

Jesus warns us about being shallow in our belief. There are people who pick and choose what to believe, whereas Jesus encourages and teaches us to believe the lot, and then when we are challenged, we will not explode.

When challenged we will then be able to act and behave as Jesus did.

How we react and respond to these words of Jesus? They are so challenging, I had to go back and read the passage again in John Chapter 8, just to make certain that they were there. And that is a good and spiritually healthy thing to do frequently. Check that what you think is there in the Scriptures is actually there.
