Word from Scotland
by Sandy Shaw
Jesus and His disciples have sailed across the Lake of Galilee following that sudden storm. They have emerged from what was a real moment of danger. We move on to Mark Chapter 5.
There are towns on the tops of the hills – we are in the region of the Decapolis, ten cities east of the Galilean Lake – but in the cliffs there are caves – and there were very needy people living in these caves – away from society – isolated – alone.
This man comes screaming. There is a supernatural strength here – and supernatural knowledge – spiritual knowledge about Jesus. There is an ability to talk – and with words that do not come from the man himself.
Jesus had a struggle. There was resistance. “What is your name?” “Legion”. Now a legion could be 6,000 Roman troops – a battalion of evil spirits were plaguing this ma’s life. Consider the suffering in this human being.
We are out of Jewish territory. There would be no pigs in Jewish territory, and Jesus valued one man more than 2,000 pigs.
Again – check the text of what actually happened, remembering this is the Word of God.
But soon – the people came, and they saw this man, and they wanted Jesus out of the road, away from this settled community. When God breaks in, people become disturbed. Many of us have found that over many years.
People find the supernatural difficult to accept, and cope with, and come to terms with.
Jesus tells this man to go home and tell your friends and neighbours what had happened.
When Jesus came back – some time later – some 4,000 men were waiting for Jesus. Look at Chapter 8.
