Word from Scotland
by Sandy Shaw
We have been reading of what is God’s number one priority where in John Chapter 6 and verse 29, we are told, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent”.
The people around Jesus say to Him, “Give us a sign and we will believe”. Give us visible proof. Do another miracle. These people had received bread and fish and it appears they had been too busy eating to realise the significance of it all.
They say, Moses gave us bread from heaven. What You did was nearly as great as Moses. You did it one afternoon only. Moses did it for 40 years.
The cheek – the impudence – the insolence – as they misunderstood everything that was happening in front of their very eyes. Jesus will not give such people a sign.
Moses did not give you real bread – not the same type of bread that I am offering you. I am offering you true bread – real bread. This bread is not ‘it’ but ‘HE’ and He comes down from the Father.
God is giving you HIM. The bread the Father is offering you imparts LIFE!
The bread I give you will give you life, and they want it immediately – immediate results please, Jesus!
Verse 35 - I am the bread. Come to me. I cannot just give it to you like that. Come and believe and you will never again go hungry, and you will never again be thirsty.
John, this is almost too deep? Jesus, can these people grasp the significance of what you are saying and teaching? John did!
The Father will lead you to me. Why do some come to Christ and some don’t? God the Father draws them. The Father guides you to that moment when you see and believe and receive the Bread of Life. When the Father leads you to Jesus Christ the Son, the Saviour, He will never drive you away. He will never reject you.
Verse 39 – One day He will raise us up. Jesus had taken their questions seriously and had led them on to deeper truths, and as soon as He did that they began to murmur! They no longer talked to the preacher. They talked about the preacher, and they questioned where he had come from.
Come down? Is this not Joseph’s boy? We know his mum and dad!
“I kent ees faither!” as we would say in Scotland. We know who this is, so who does he think he is?
But they did not know who His Father was, so they jumped to wrong conclusions.
That is the only exercise some people get – jumping to wrong conclusions!
Jesus knew what they were saying, and Jesus so wanted to win these people. He loved them with the love of the God the Father. This was why He came. This was why the Father sent Him.
You may not have seen My Father, but you can hear Him and you can listen to Him, but they did not want to!
John Chapter is so full of profound spiritual truths and insights and there are not to be hurried through or rushed. These come to us from Almighty God and it is good and helpful and spiritually profitable to stop and pause and meditate upon what He is saying to us as individuals, through Jesus Christ His Son.
