The Road to Freedom From Slavery, Bondage, and Sin
Date Posted: October 9, 2023

Pharaoh in Egypt feared for the growth of the Children of Israel – hardship arises. Finally, a leader is born – during the first pogrom – how did all this happen?

The Hebrews are slaves in Egypt, which was heavily fortified country – and God is their Redeemer – the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He hears their cries – intervenes – and rescues them – leading them into freedom.

Two million people – men women and children got out of their chains – and escaped – via the desert and the wilderness. They are led by a man called Moses.

We can apply all these thoughts spiritually. This is not merely a human story – if it were only human it would have been impossible. They would never have made it.

In every part of the book of Exodus we see the hand of God – God is in it all. God is intervening as we read of miracle after miracle. God is looking after His Chosen people – and He is preparing them for the Promised Land.

To those who wonder today if there is a God – all we have to do is ask that question – “How do you explain the birth of Israel – and the survival of Israel?” He is the God Who performs miracles – and Israel is His Chosen People.

Why should we read this Book of Exodus? Well, the New Testament is so influenced by this Book – words like – covenant – the blood of the lamb – Passover – leaven – are all explained and find their root in this Book. And – the God of Moses is the God and Father of Jesus.

Here is the same God as in Matthew – Acts - Corinthians – or Revelation. And – we learn about His love – and leading and judgement and compassion – through what He has done for others – and how He has raised up others – and used others.

God is the Redeemer – the One Who rescues people out of trouble and saves people from their sin and sinful situations. This is one of the great truths we learn from the Book of Exodus. When God calls and speaks – we have to follow and launch out – sometimes against all odds – and then you find He redeems.

Look at that last verse of Genesis – it ends in a coffin. Genesis was never meant to end that way. Genesis in one sense speaks of man’s failure. God’s people need to be rescued out of all of this – out of the grave – out of slavery. We need to be rescued out of sin – because the consequences of sin is sickness and pain and slavery and suffering and death.

Here we see the people of God, but they are not in the place where God wants them to be. We are not always in the place where Jesus Christ wants us to be – and sometimes, even the People of God can get into some awful messes.

But the message of the Cross – is similar to that which we read of in Exodus – “I am the God Who gets you out of this – Who redeems you – Who rescues you. There is an exit – there is hope – there is a way out through ME – to a better life - to eternal lie.

Jesus Christ is right at the very heart of this Book – Jesus was alive long before he was born – we need to be reminded of that. Jesus Christ was involved in Exodus – especially where we read of a Lamb – a Rock – and a Tabernacle.

And remember too – that one day Jesus Christ had a conversation with Moses on a mountain – about HIS EXODUS which he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem on the Cross. What is the significance? Moses, you brought the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt – I am going to bring people out of the slavery of sin, and I am going to do it in Jerusalem. They both led God’s people out of sin and slavery.

Some 70 people had come down to Egypt for food in a day of famine – they only needed to have been there for five years or so – but they remained for 400 years.

There was that day when a family sold their brother into slavery – Joseph was sold into slavery – sold as a slave – but that was used by God for a season – but that sin had serious consequences later on. That normally happens – sooner or later.

“Loving heavenly Father – we thank You and praise You and worship You. When you see Your children in a real mess, You intervene – You draw near – You come and visit Your people in their pain. We thank You for what we see in these opening Chapters of Exodus – and how they are so relevant to our situations today. Hear the cries of Your people today – wherever they are – and answer their prayers, in and through Jesus Christ.” Amen.
