Word from Scotland
by Sandy Shaw
As we come to Isaiah Chapter 44and verse 6 , we read words which many today might find difficult or even challenging – but this is the God of the Bible and there is no other God other than the God of the Bible.
In Chapter 44, Isaiah is told to speak of the futility of worshipping an idol.
Verse 9 – A man cuts down the three and uses one bit of wood to cook his meal and from the rest of the wood he makes something, and worships it and offers praise to it – “Save me – you are my God” – verse 17 – how absurd, yet many are doing just this very thing today
Verses 24to 28 – We learn something further of what God is like. I have done certain things – I am doing certain things – I choose people and I call individuals.
What would happen if someone arose in the United Nations and read out some of these passages in Isaiah. We have seen that over these past few years in various ways. Time runs out – the coming again of Jesus Christ draws closer. God is focusing the attention of the entire world upon this piece of land.
I am going to use a man called Cyrus – he will be my shepherd. The ruler of Persia will say – let Jerusalem be rebuilt – let the foundations of the Temple be re-laid.
Imagine if you had been taken off into slavery – into the heat of Babylon as a prisoner, with all its occult activities, for over 40 years, and you are wondering if you were ever going to return home. Another prophet comes and proclaims – I am going to bring you back, and your cities will be rebuilt, and the Temple will be restored. Isaiah proclaimed this – so Jeremiah.
I will give you a name to watch – for when you hear of a man called Cyrus appearing on the international scene expect something dramatic and wonderful to happen.
In Chapters 44,45 we read of one of God’s surprises – now there are people who do not like God’s surprises – I wonder why. Cyrus appears from nowhere – God can raise up a man from nowhere – and has done so down through the centuries. From the 1960’s onwards we have seen a global outpouring of the Holy Spirit – touching virtually every nation around the world – but some who should have known better have been closed to God’s surprises.
The same God who brought His people out of Egypt will lead them home from Babylon. Babylon is a byword for a godless civilisation and Israel is now back in her land
God used this ruler Cyrus – Persia overrun Babylon – and the conquerors allowed Israel to return. When God sees His people in tight situations He will raise up someone to rescue His people.
Verse 9 – God began to speak to Cyrus and within a few years Israel had returned.
We learn that God has every right to use whomever He chooses – the clay does not say to the Potter, what are you making – and the child has no right to say to his parents, why did you bring me into this world?
Verse 11 – God says concerning things to come – do you question me about my children? I will raise up Cyrus.
Verse 13 – I will raise up Cyrus. In my righteousness he will build my city and set my exiles free. Don't you worry little man, concerning what I am doing – I am the Lord God Almighty.
“Loving gracious Father – not only are You Lord God Almighty – but because of Jesus Christ, Your Son, we can call You, Father – Holy Father – You are different from every kind of earthly father – and before You we bow with worship and praise and thanksgiving. Hear us as we pray for Your People – no matter where they are – or what they are experiencing – hear us as we pray for Israel, and for the Church of Jesus Christ.” Amen.
