Blueprint #29: Mt Sinai and the Ten Commandments
Date Posted: April 18, 2006

(Rice, sand, and a sieve demonstrate along with Moses why we need to be set apart to God.)

The Lord gave us the blueprint of His Word to architect our family on Jesus Christ.

Going through the Bible with your family…

Weekly Scripture:
Exodus 19 & 20

Story:
"Mt Sinai and the Ten Commandments"

Application:
Being "set apart" unto God for His purpose.

Summary:
After leaving Egypt, the Israelites came to Mt. Sinai and set up camp. God called to Moses from the mountain. Moses told the nation of Israel the promise of God. The people were quick to respond with, "We will do all that the Lord has spoken." On the third day the people came with Moses to the mountain, but the thunder, lightning, smoke, and trumpets frightened the people. They asked Moses to talk to them and not let God speak or they would die. The Lord gave Moses instructions on how the people should set themselves apart for Him in the way they worship and live.

Focus:
We should become holy "set apart" as God is holy!

Finding Christ:
In Exodus 20:10 Moses relays the words of the Lord to the children of Israel and tells them that God says the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord. In Matthew 12:8 Jesus claims to be God by saying that the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

Live the Lesson:
Before the lesson mix a big bag of uncooked rice with a lot of sand or gravel (you may want to test this before the devotional time to make sure what size sieve you need to make this work).

Sit the rice/sand mixture in front of the children and ask them to separate the rice from the sand. Explain to them the rice represents those following God and the sand represents the world and how mixed together they are useless. Let them work at it for a while until they feel like it is the never ending task.

Now take the sieve out and tell them the sieve represents the only way to separate ourselves from the world and ask if they have any ideas who that could be?

After separating the rice from the sand…it is time to make something yummy with that rice, since when we are separated unto God we are useful for feeding others the Word (okay you can use new, clean rice). Here is a recipe for Souperated (Separated) Rice: http://www.familyblueprint.org/souperated_rice_recipe.htm

Memory Verse:
"For you are a holy people to the Lord." Deuteronomy 7:6

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please help me to be separated from the world, that I might be useful to You.

Living the Life:
This week discuss with your children ways we can separate ourselves from the world and be set apart as holy for God’s use.
